Abstract

The municipality of Santa Cruz de Mompox (Department of Bolivar, Colombia) whose historic district was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995 gives its name to a region known as Depresión Momposina, sometimes mistaken as La Mojana region. Is the Depresión Momposina the same region as La Mojana? Which geographical area does it cover? In order to find a possible response to this question, several sources are consulted. The differences between the regional demarcations with those names are identified, and vary depending on the actors that established their limits as well as on the goals they persecute. On the other hand, the territorial approach to the proposed Momposino Cultural Ecosystem is based on theoretical and methodological guidelines that joint the historic district demands with the ones of the territory -those related to heritage expressionsas a contribution to heritage assessment, protection, management and regional planning. This paper is a result of the research: «Historic district and territory: Momposino Cultural Ecosystem».
