Prevalencia de depresión posparto en el hospital san juan de Dios, Cali, Colombia. septiembre-diciembre, 2011

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of postpartum depression in women seen at Hospital San Juan de Dios (HSJD) in Cali between September and December 2011, and identify disease-related factors. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study conducted in 149 consecutive patients delivered with no complications between September and December 2011 at Hospital San Juan de Dios, a general, intermediate complexity private hospital located in Southwestern Colombia. The diagnosis of depression was made using the Edinburgh post-partum depression scale, including factors like age, gestational age, marital status, relationship with the father, income level, socioeconomic bracket, prior depression, depression in the family, alcohol intake. Descriptive statistics were used together with univariate and multivariate analysis in order to determine diseaserelated factors. Results: A prevalence of 46.3% of post-partum depression was found among the 149 women studied, with a confidence interval (CI 95%) of 38.1-54.7% according to the Edinburgh scale. Among women with a positive score, 21%, CI 95% (9.3-52.4%) had had suicidal ideation in the previous week. A relationship between prior depression and post-partum depression was found, OR 2.43, CI 95% (1.14-5.18%). Conclusion: The prevalence of post-partum depression was high in the study population; pregnant women with a history of depression have a high risk of developing the disease and require additional assessment and, eventually, preventive treatment.
