Resumen

Purpose SATReLO is a software platform designed to support the language
development process for children with hearing impairments. The platform
makes it possible to configure, generate, and assign video games to an individual
patient and to monitor their progress. It also allows children to use the video games
assigned by a therapist. Each video game contains instructions that guide a child
to meet their goals according to the therapeutic purpose. The games assigned to
the child are modified according to the progress in their therapy. This study made a
therapeutic evaluation which sought to identify to what extent SATReLO supports the
therapeutic process of children with hearing deficits who are treated at the Valle del
Cauca Institute for Blind and Deaf Children.
Method We created a group of 20 children receiving language therapy. Half the
group used the software as an activity that was complementary to their rehabilitation
process, while the other half did not use this complementary activity. Qualitative data were
obtained from the observations, by recording and scoring of the children’s responses.
Quantitative data were obtained from the application of three standardized tests.
Results The group that used SATReLO achieved a higher percentage of items
with better performance in the second application of standardized tests, compared to
the results obtained in the first application. Additionally, the percentage of items in
which participants scored lower in the second application, was lower in the group that
used SATReLO. Additionally, there were benefits from the psycho-affective dimension
for the group that used SATReLO.
Limitations This study is limited by a small sample size and the criteria to select
the sample.
Conclusions We found that SATReLO contributes to the development of
comprehensive and expressive language. It makes this possible by facilitating
mechanization in the understanding and expression of language structures, and
promotes an understanding and expression of basic notions related to the management
of adverbs. Additionally, SATReLO contributes to the stimulation of cognitive abilities
such as observation, inference, and deduction. With regards to the socio-affective
dimension, the platform also promotes autonomy and tolerance to frustration.
