Resumen
ISO 9001 is one of the most widely accepted international standards worldwide. The standard has been updated recently in order to face the challenges of the global economy, technology and the environment. The objective of this research is to describe the main changes proposed, the expected benefits and impacts from the adoption of a quality management system based onthe requirements of ISO 9001: 2015. Initially, a review of the context and evolution of the norm is presented. Subsequently, the main changes of the latest version are described, and finally the role of quality management systems and sustainable development in emerging countries is discussed. The results indicate that the implementation of the new version of the standard as a strategic tool will generate a contribution to the sustainability of organizations, and as an externality to sustainable development initiatives.
