Resumen

The computation of the modal properties of structures is becoming increasingly important in structural integrity monitoring process. One of the engineer's objectives is to be able to establish the location on the structure of the set of sensors available for monitoring. This paper presents a
comparison of different direct techniques for locating a certain number of sensors on plane trusses
with a view to modal identification (natural frequencies and modal shapes). A total of 3 large plane
trusses are modeled analytically and their modal properties are calculated. After this, the positions of the sensors on the trusses are determined considering the following criteria: Fisher Information Error, Eigenvalue Vector Product, Driving Point Residues, Modal Kinetic Energy and Modal Strain Energy. It can be seen that the configuration of sensors obtained is sensitive to the criteria used, the number of sensors, and the modal characteristics of the structure. In this sense, it is concluded that defining the best configuration among those given by the criteria requires another criterion related to the objective of modal identification.
