Resumen

This article explores the possibility of using statistical methods in studies of musical semiotics, given that psychomusicological studies linking music and emotion are not adequate to understand processes of musical signification from a historical perspective. The text focuses on the construction of the correlation between certain pieces of urban Colombian Andean music and the idea of melancholy, between 1890 and 1930, under the general hypothesis that the musical sound may have played a role in the production of subjectivities that marked the transition to industrial capitalism in Colombia. To get an idea of the weight of this correlation, a multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) was done between musical and textual elements in the twenty-seven songs transcribed in the book Canciones y recuerdos by Jorge Anez (1951). This analysis shows indexical relations between music and text that may have worked as a basis for a specific topic of melancholy in the Colombian Andean music.
