N2 - Acute kidney injury is a common complication in critically ill patients, and is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. As this condition has a wide clinical spectrum, with multiple causes and pathophysiological pathways, the patient approach should be individualised. The following article describes the most frequent causes of acute kidney injury in patients in an Intensive Care Unit, and emphasises, in light of the clinical evidence, the preventive or therapeutic options for each one.
