Descripción
This study introduces the trajectories of persistence in exporting as a fresh concept to analyze exporting behavior over time. By approaching capabilities development as a learning process, this study proposes and tests a framework that links operational and marketing firms' capabilities to the trajectories of persistence in exporting. By using a data set of 2.913 firms over 14 years, this study identified four trajectories of persistence in exporting. Also, it discovered that while the interplay between marketing and operational capabilities relates positively to Trajectory 1 (non-exporting) but negatively to Trajectory 4 (persistent), operational capabilities relate positively to the erratic (Trajectory 2) but negatively to the slow-growing trajectory of persistence in exporting (Trajectory 3). On the other hand, marketing capabilities do not relate to any trajectory. Our findings provide implications for managers and policymakers interested in fueling the involvement of firms and countries in foreign markets.
