Descripción
Frogs belonging to Dendrobatidae family have among their epithelial secretions lipophilic alkaloids; some of them could have pharmacological potential as analgesics or muscle relaxing. Oophaga histrionica is a colorful frog that can be found at Valle del Cauca (Colombia) and for this frog in Valle del Cauca there are not reports about the presence of alkaloids in its skin, and its diet is partially known. Establishing the presence of alkaloids in the skin of this frog could allow having availability of alkaloids for research and may be will increase the alkaloids types known for this frog. Taking into account the hypothesis that frogs don´t produce the alkaloids but they acquire them from the diet (alimentary hypothesis) knowing the diet will help us to know the primary source of alkaloids. So that in this research we will investigate the presence of alkaloids in the skin of O. histrionica and also the diet of this frog. We will collect 16 individuals of this specie to determine if there are alkaloids in the skin using thin layer chromatography (TLC). We will also collect stomachal contents from 40 frogs (10/sample) and this will be identified taxonomically by order. and based on frecuency, number and volume of prey categories we will establish the index of relative importance (IRI) in order to determine the most important prey categories in the diet of O. histrionica.
