Descripción
A board of directors proposes an exorbitant pay package for the CEO. A company announces extensive layoffs. A government rolls out tightened fiscal policy measures. Such actions might typically be met with scorn, loss of goodwill, protest. Such actions, however, are sometimes taken only after advised by a consultant - compensation consultants, managerial consultants, the International Monetary Fund, and so on. How does the presence of such advisers change how we perceive morality? If the consultant is an independent third party offering an unbiased opinion, it seems straightforward that we would judge the action less harshly. However, many consultants may be biased to tell the executives what they want to hear now, so that they can be rehired in the future. Could such slanted advice possibly alter moral perceptions? To our knowledge, we are the first ones to study this question experimentally.
