Descripción

Skeletal muscle is the most abundant of the human body's tissues. Skeletal muscle ischemia-reperfusion injury is of interest in clinical situations such as peripheral arterial occlusive disease (Pipinos et al., 2008), orthopedic and plastic surgeries where surgical tourniquets are used, limb transplantations, limb trauma, and strong concentric muscle work (Khanna, Cowled & Fitridge, 2005). Skeletal muscle ischemia-reperfusion injury induces pain and cellular changen (Pipinos et al., 2008). In order to study basic pathophysiological processes and to test potential therapeutic interventions, experimental animal models of skeletal muscle ischemia–reperfusion injury have been widely used (Blaisdell, 2002). Using a tourniquet to induce complete ischemia to the hindlimb of an adult rat, the isometric contractile function of the soleus (slow twitch) and the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) (fast twitch) muscles have been studied (Fish et al., 1989; Carvalho, McKee & Green, 1996; Carvalho, McKee & Green, 1997; Woitaske & McCarter, 1998). In those previous studies it has been consistently observed that maximal twitch force (Pt), maximal rate of twitch tension development (DP/dt), and maximal tetanus force (Po), all decrease in correlation with respect to increasing hours of total ischemia (1, 2, 3 and 4 hours) (Fish et al., 1989; Carvalho, McKee & Green, 1996; Carvalho, McKee & Green, 1997; Woitaske & McCarter, 1998) and after the two hours of ischemic this parameters no have recuperation (Morales & Fierro; Fish et al., 1989; Carvalho, McKee & Green, 1996; Carvalho, McKee & Green, 1997) .The propose of this study is evaluation in injury and function parameters the influence thirty minutes of application of therapeutic cold for three days on muscle injury and regeneration after ischemic and reperfusion in Soleus and extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL).
