Abstract
The article examines the visibility given by media to sexual violence in Peru, Nicara-gua, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia. The purpose is to assess how Colombia’s armed conflict affects the attention given by media to sexual violence, when compared with that given by other media outlets in Latin America. By analyzing the news articles published during 2012-2014, the articles probes that Colombia’s newspaper El Tiempo gives greater consideration to the problem of sexual violence than that given by the other media outlets studied. Moreover, the article evidences that the substantial difference in media visibility cannot be clarified by contrasting the reality of sexual violence of the cou-ntries selected. In the conclusion, the article underscores how Colombian women have overcome the terrors of war and articulated their efforts for their empowerment. This in turn has generated a greater visibility to sexual violence.
