Abstract
Qualitative research with the aim of understanding the gender meanings present in the narrative of 4 assaulted men in their relationship as users of the Family Police Station in the city of Palmira, Colombia. The results from semi-structured interviews show that violence arises as an attempt to resolve conflicts in the couple’s relationship, related to the desire to dominate the other and gain recognition; relational pattern that is accentuated by sociocultural contradictions and ambiguities, with respect to what is expected of men and women. An inclusive understanding and intervention of intimate partner violence requires including the voices of men and women, overcoming the invisibility, indifference, or lack of credibility to men who report being abused, thus breaking rigid gender structures that favor violent relationships.
