Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the reliability, internal, and situational validity of the experience sampling method to assess Colombian children's emotional, motivational and mental states during their academic activities. The sample comprised 146 children from low socio-economic backgrounds, aged 5-7 years, from preschool and first grade of elementary school. An 11-question survey was administered to measure what children do, and how they think and feel during academic activities. There was an adequate response rate to the questionnaire, over 89%, and a response time that did not interfere with academic activities (2 minutes and 20 seconds). The responses showed coherence between the activities performed and the emotional and mental states reported, therefore, there is adequate internal and situational validity. It is concluded that the experience sampling method allows to know the cognitive and emotional states of children in educational contexts.
