Abstract

According to IUCN´s red list, about a third of the planet's amphibian species are under threat. The main threat is habitat loss, and this is now reinforced by the chytrid fungus epidemic that has strongly affected the populations of some species in Mesoamerica. In this symposium several projects were presented, all of which are dealing with amphibian species whose last populations are restricted to single localities (AZE sites Alliance for Zero Extinctions). We discussed the need to establish a common regional strategy to deal with the conservation problems related to this group in our region, and also the establishment of long-term monitoring programs to evaluate both the population trends and the effectiveness of any actions taken.
