Abstract
This article examines the emergence and development of Palestinian Islamism in the recent decades, as a political expression with considerable influence in the Palestinian terri-tories that has shaped a complex scenario in internal Palestinian politics and a conflictive relationship with Israel. Beyond the image spread in the West, where the connection with terrorism is dominant, Hamas, the most prominent Palestinian Islamist organization, has developed high-impact roles and an increasing importance in other areas, which has evolved in recent years. With the predominance of the plo as the representative of the Palestinian people and the dominant political force, the rise of Hamas and its increasing involvement in political and social scenarios have had substantial effects on Palestinian society. Its openly anti-Israeli and anti-American discourse reveals the complexities involved in the efforts to achieve stability and peace in the Middle east, a region of diverse and different interests.
