Abstract

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is associated with sleep-related respiratory disorders and impaired respiratory gas exchange that, in the early stages, can manifest as hypoventilation, but progressively evolve, from a reduction in forced vital capacity to requiring non-invasive mechanical ventilation. In addition to sleep-related respiratory disorders, patients may experience changes in the sleep architecture, increased micro-awakenings, and decreased rem sleep (r), insomnia, restless legs syndrome, or unusual behaviors during sleep. All of this has a negative impact on the quality of life of patients and their families. In the present review, the main sleep-related respiratory disorders that occur in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy are described, and recommendations for their timely diagnosis and treatment are made.
