Abstract

Thyroid storm (TT) is a rare but potentially fatal condition if not detected and treated promptly. It is characterized by severe clinical manifestations at the level of the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, and gastrointestinal system, associated with elevated levels of free triiodothyronine (T3) and free thyroxine (T4). Infections and/or treatment discontinuation are the most frequent triggers. Identifying the triggering factor, reducing circulating levels of thyroid hormones, and admission to an intensive care unit become the cornerstone of treatment. In this review, based on a clinical scenario, we will provide information regarding the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to TT.
