Abstract

Objectives: To describe the mortality rates for suicide and auto inflicted injuries from 1973 to 1996 taking into account the data from the death certificate provided by the DANE. To establish the associated risks for suicide in the Colombian population thru logistic regression models.

Design: Secondary Analysis of the death certificates provided by the DANE (1973 – 1996).

Results: From the socio – demographic variables that were under study for the years 1973 – 1996 we found that the greatest proportion of deaths caused by suicide was present in the group between 15 to 24 years for women and 60 years and more for men. The suicide rates were between 4-6/100.000 for men and 1-3/100.000 for women. Globally they were between 2-4/100.000 for both genders and for all the groups of age during the period of time under study. The rates increased to 4- 5/100.000 for persons 15 and older. We present the models of association for three years (1985. 1993, 1996) in which we observe in 1996 an OR = 54.4 (Cal 95%: 38.4-77,1, p 0.05) for the group from 15 years to 24 years old. The OR was 8.7 (6.1- 12.3) for those between 25 to 59 years old. For men it was 3.1 (2.7- 3.6) and in the urban, it was 0.4 (0.3- 0.5). In the article, other relevant descriptions and associations are shown.
