Abstract

The following investigation presents a detailed study of the corrosive properties of a binary/quaternary [TiC/TiSiCN] system. The microstructural results by TEM evidenced that the TiC layer presents a crystalline arrangement, and that the TiSiCN layer, presents two distinct phases, an amorphous phase (a-SiCN) and the presence of nc-TiSiCN nanocrystals, as corroborated by precious investigations. The surface analysis indicated that the coating with 70 bilayers presented a decrease of 62.13 % in roughness compared to the system with n = 1 bilayer. These characteristics influenced the corrosion response, obtaining an increase of 95.64 % in polarization resistance for system with n = 70 bilayers when compared to the multilayer system with n = 1 with bilayer. These results indicated that these multisystem coatings conformed by a binary and quaternary compound is a suitable candidate to be implemented as a protective coating on engineered devices.
