Abstract

Introduction:Burnout, or occupational burnout syndrome, is one of the main conditions affecting medical students' mental healthduring their exposure to the work environment as healthcare workers. Likewise, it has been observed that some of the main contributing factors to the high level of burnout in medical students are intense academic workload, imbalance between work and personal life, inflexible schedules, financial stress, difficulties in interpersonal relationships, and in some cases, housing issues. Methods:A questionnaire was administered to tenth and twelfth-semester students, inquiring about sociodemographic variables, healthy lifestyle habits such as physical activity and sleep hygiene, and work conditions.Additionally, the level of burnout was assessed using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory scale(16), and the measurement of positive mental health was done using the Lukat-Positive Mental Health Scale (14), both of which are validated in Spanish (15)(17). Subsequently, data analysis was performed using the SPSS application through parametric and non-parametric tests. Results:It was found that 100% of the participating medical students experienced burnout, with a moderate to high level of burnout in 72.4% of the participants. Additionally, it was evident that burnout was more prevalent among female students and those in the tenth semester compared to the twelfth semester. Likewise, regarding healthy lifestyle habits, it was observed that higher scores on the instruments assessing good sleep hygiene and physical activity were associated with higher levels of positive mental health and lower levels of burnout. Finally, we observed an inverse relationship between the level of burnout and positive mental health, as higher levels of positive mental health were associated with lower levels of burnout. Conclusion:Burnout is a real problem that affects themajority of medical students during their exposure to the work environment. Additionally, it is important to consider that the level of burnout is related to positive mental health. In the same way, positive mental health is related to healthy lifestyle habits such as physical activity and good sleep hygiene. Therefore, these findings are of utmost importance for implementing interventions to improve workers' mental health and provide them with tools tofight burnout
