Abstract

This chapter analyzes changes and transformations that some of the urban and rural areas on the outskirts of the municipality of Tumaco, Colombia, have undergone as a result of the pandemic. As a contribution to the strengthening of local economies and their territorial impacts, the research focuses on case studies of vulnerable communities that have dealt successfully with the health crisis, using their own resources by way of autonomous organization strategies grounded in their local knowledge and traditions, and applying mechanisms for organizing their own local productive activities that exploit the natural resources available in their region. In this sense, organizations of fishermen, cooperatives of cacao producers, and associations of shell gatherers deployed understanding and construction of their territory as a resilience strategy in the face of crises – in this case health crises. The strategy grew out of a cultural and social context that has historically been subjected to multiple situations of conflict, not only health–related but also social and economic.
