Abstract

Gay and lesbian youth report high social discrimination, leading to multiple psychosocial difficulties. This research aimed to recognize the resources and barriers in the coming out process of Colombian gay and lesbian youth within their families. The study was qualitative with a thematic narrative design. Interviews were conducted with 15 families and an interactive timeline called "My trip." Barriers such as the belief system and social and cultural aspects of Cali society were identified by a thematic analysis of the narratives. Moreover, support resources such as books, movies, and previous experiences were reported. Families and religion sometimes appear as a barrier or resources of emotional support. Affirmative actions that promote the well-being of gay and lesbian youth through gender-sensitive and sex-sensitive services that address the entire family must be developed in future research.
