Abstract

Purpose: To determine the demographic and surgical characteristics of patients who underwent to Bipolar Transurethral Prostate Resection (TURP) in the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio (HUSI), and to determine the rate of complications and compare the results with our series conducted in 2007-8. Materials and methods: A cross-Sectional Study was performed by reviewing the records of patients with Obstructive Prostate Enlargement in the HUSI, who were treated with Bipolar TURP between January 1, 2011 and March 31, 2013. Age, resection time, catheterization time, length of stay and complications were measured. Results: A total of 107 TURP procedures were performed, 90 with Bipolar and 17 with monopolar energy. Data were complete in 85 patients who underwent bipolar surgery. Mean age was 67.8. years (46-85). Mean resection time was 69 minutes (30-120). The overall mean time to take out the urethral catheter was 54.7. hours (19-187), but in patients who were discharged from hospital without the catheter it was 47.8. hours (19-111). Mean length of stay was 50.3. hours (23-176). Blood transfusion, endoscopic intervention, urinary retention, urinary infection and TUR syndrome were 4.7%, 3.5%, 3.5%, 1.17% and 1.17%, respectively. Conclusions:: Bipolar TURP enables older patients to be treated, with prolonged surgical times. The complication rate remains stable. Surgical measures such as time with urethral catheter, or length of hospital stay must be evaluated in the context of a urological training institution.
