Abstract
The standard practice of foundation engineering calculates the capacity of the pile regardless that the construction process can affect the geometric component of the bearing capacity. In this paper, we present a method for incorporating the method of construction in reliability based design of piles by mean of the random finite element method, which involves the inherent variability of soil geomechanical properties. Results are summarized as follow: a) a rational explanation to the safety factor for the design load is proposed, b) design charts for piles taking into account both, the effect of construction and the inherent uncertainty of soil, c) inputs needed for reliability-based design of piles.
