Abstract

cities in Colombia. A mixed observational study was conducted: Quantitative and
qualitative. We estimated prevalence of use with confidence intervals, bivariate
and multiple analysis using generalized linear models. Also conducted focus
groups and depth interviews to examine the reasons for use of this protection
element. Was identified a pattern of increased use in Ibague (64.9%) respect to
Valledupar (10.2%); It was lower in men (35.4%) than females (44.8%); larger in
taxi drivers (54.4%) than in drivers of trucks and cars (24.9%). The possibility of
use was 16 times higher in Ibague compared to Valledupar (95% CI 12.8 to 20.4).
Was identified the seat belts is not recognized as a protect device, is perceived
uncomfortable and that subtracts mobility to the driver inside the vehicle; its
main use is to avoid a traffic penalty fee. It is concluded that in the country must
be promoted control, monitoring and education measures for the effective use of
this safety device.
