Abstract
In this research article we describe the contribution of Afro-descendant traditional midwives of the Colombian Pacific to peace building in their communities. For the study we conducted a qualitative approach through a semi-structured interview technique with midwives and laboring women from the Colombian Pacific region, residents of Cali and Buenaventura, in addition to participant observation in organizational meetings of midwives belonging to the Association of United Midwives of the Pacific (Asoparupa), and a bibliographic review. As a result, we found that the daily practices of Afro-descendant traditional midwives of the Colombian Pacific generate a type of autonomy, agency, social reflection and endogenous transformation, which allows the attribution of capacities for community cohesion, the defense of life and cultural diversity. This translates into practices that strengthen peace building and, therefore, contribute to the search for social justice in Colombia.
