Abstract

Dual isolation is an alternative solution to the problem of controlling excessive displacements in single isolation
systems without modifying the floor acceleration response and the interstory drift response of the main
structure. Inerters are recently developed devices capable of generating a control force proportional to the
relative acceleration between their terminals. This study evaluates the optimized seismic design of a 10-story
shear building model subjected to subduction earthquakes and equipped with four linear seismic isolation
alternatives: single isolation, dual isolation, single isolation with inerters and dual isolation with inerters. Using
the Differential Evolution Algorithm, the stiffness and damping of the isolation layers and the inertance of the
inerters were optimized to minimize accelerations at the main structure and the lateral deformations of the
isolation layers. Finally, the nature of the objective functions and the performance of the optimization algorithm
are discussed.
