Abstract

Several studies show a large inequity in women ́s involvement/enrollment in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) areas, especially in Latin America. SAGA project, from UNESCO, proposes a new methodology and set of instruments for monitoring and evaluating gender equality in these areas to support policy-makers within organizations. The European project, W-STEM, points out the lack of specific information about gender disparity and implemented policies in Latin America universities. This article presents a self-assessment about gender equality at the engineering faculty of Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota Colombia, using data like percentages of applications, admissions, drop-outs, academic grades and financial aids. This data clearly shows a gender disparity and the need to define policies and strategies to assess this situation within universities.
