Abstract
The strategic importance of the Persian Gulf provides Iran a key role in a region where interests and growing tensions converge at regional and international levels. The Iranian government’s threats to close the Strait of Hormuz in response to international pressure and sanctions over its nuclear program, and the development of military exercises in the area, have generated a geopolitical uncertainty in a region already highly troubled. The implications of an escalation in the tensions set up a potentially dangerous scenario, due to the precarious regional stability, also generating a major concern in petroleum consu-ming countries and, despite the apparent, in the Islamic regime itself, which relies heavily on the income of its trade.
