Abstract

: Several of the events that take place in Mark’s final accounts assume a clear apocalyptic overlay, in deep connection with the expectations of the coming of the “day of the Lord.” It is from such an overlay that the way of recognizing the identity of Jesus also becomes understandable. Thus, events such as the darkening of “the whole earth,” the veil of the sanctuary being torn from top to bottom, and the vision of the centurion are signs of the imminent arrival of such a day. The description of the events is addressed to the empowerment of the readers and listeners who do find themselves, as spectators, facing the story, so that they can deepen their understanding of the identity of Jesus, of God, and of discipleship through the words of the centurion and the apocalyptic events that take place around this confession.
