Abstract

Contemplation of the Achievement of Love in St. Ignatius of Loyola’s “Spiritual Exercises” is a source of inspiration for open-eyed mysticism in the work of Benjamín González Buelta. The “Spiritual Exercises”, as the author understands them, constitute a testing ground for the open--eyed mystic, leading one to a horizon of ordering feelings and expanding one’s senses, in order to perceive God in reality and, through His gaze, to engage with it. Contemplation of love is the culmination of a process that unfolds in the experience of being observed, of allowing oneself to be looked at, and of the desire to look, to embrace one’s entire being with God’s gaze and to collaborate with Him in a world that, for open-eyed mysticism, is a sacrament.
