Abstract
This article describes the experience of designing and implementing a statistics course for industrial engineers based on competencies. The study includes considerations the learning expectations of the academic institutions regarding the professional training of their engineering students. The process of building the course implied the analysis of the fundamental content, the methodology to be applied in the classroom and the implementation of an evaluation methodology. The results of the implementation of the course show that students were able to develop the necessary cognitive and affective skills. Moreover, it allowed teachers to make substantial changes in their teaching methodology.
