Abstract

Aging is a complex process influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, including lifestyles adopted throughout life. Health in old age is closely linked to individual decisions and social determinants that shape our life choices. Longevity is defined as a long and healthy life, but this goal is threatened by the physical and mental deteriora-tion associated with aging, as well as the increased risk of chronic diseases and mortality. However, a combination of natural aging and healthy lifestyles can contribute to healthier aging.Globally, a significant increase in the older adult population is projected by 2050, posing challenges for healthcare and social assistance systems. The declaration of the Decade of Healthy Aging by the United Nations is a call to action to address these challenges and promote longer and healthier lives through global collaboration. In Colombia, public policies for aging focus on ensuring autonomy, dignity, and integration of older adults into society. However, significant challenges persist, such as lack of access to healthcare services and socioeconomic discrimination.Promoting healthy lifestyles is essential to achieve greater longevity and quality of life in old age. This includes adopting a balanced diet, engaging in physical and social activities, and cultivating psychological resilience. Over-coming challenges associated with healthy aging requires a comprehensive approach that addresses both individual and societal needs. Only through awareness and proactive action can we build a more resilient and healthier future for all generations.
