Abstract
This paper identifies referents in Japan’s natural surroundings of the construction of urban and rural spaces with the presence of populations affected by economic, social, and environmental problems. From various local economy projects and programs, the paper analyzes the use of machizukuri community
organization mechanisms. Based on a comprehensive territorial vision, the research shows the capacity for social resilience achieved by communities by transforming their physical environment through the establishment of satoyama and satoumi landscapes as complementary strategies for environmental sustainability. Finally, the paper analyzes the possibility of implementing these processes in the Colombian context, bearing in mind the different realities and potentialities that the Colombian community organization tradition offers as a
mechanism for the improvement and transformation of its environment.
