Abstract

Background: Different studies have tried to identify risk factors and possible biological and biomechanical associations to preventthe development of peri-implant diseases. Purpose: To determine the frequency and possible associations between peri-implantdiseases and potential risk factors. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study on 75 patients with 318 implants placed betweenthe 2008 and 2015 was conducted. D ata were collected from clinical rec ords and patient and implant conditions to determine thefrequency of peri-implant disease and its associations with possible risk factors. Results: Peri-implant disease total frequency was81.33 % in the patients assessed. The frequency of peri-implant m ucositis and peri-implantitis at patient level was 74.7 % and 34.7%, respectively. The frequency of peri-implant mucositis at the implant level was 55.7 % and the frequency of peri-implantitis was20.7 %. Previous history of periodontal disease and the presence of active periodontal disease, smoking status, implant diameter, and less than 2 mm of keratinized mucosa were related to an increase of the prevalence of peri-implant disease. Conclusions: Total frequency of peri-implant disease was 81.33 %. Periodontitis as a history or current disease and the absence of supportivemaintenance therapy seem to be factors associated with the onset and progress of these pathologies.
