Abstract

Emotional well-being has been defined with multiple approaches. Some authors addressthis topic through various dimensions, such as individual, familial, structural, and community aspects. In Colombia, the Ministry ofEducation is the political entity responsible for promoting emotional well-being in education institutions. Therefore, with the Decree1295 of 2010, an adequatelystructured well-being policy wasestablished to standardizetools for providing supportin this matter within educational institutions. The PontificiaUniversidad Javeriana (PUJ) uses various means, such as rectorate, communications department, and university mediato promote emotional well-being within its campusand through the students and teachers. This study aims to evaluatethe perceptionof the individuals'capacities within the PUJ community for the development of emotional well-being. Objectives: To assessthe perceptionof the capacities of individuals within the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana community for the development of emotional well-being among students and teachersfrom various faculties. Methodology: Through focus groups and semi-structured interviews done with teachers and students, different perspectives on emotional well-being were assessed, characterizing individual, familial, and community dimensions. Results: Spirituality was perceived as a protective individual factor for emotional well-being. Sleep was seen as a protective or risk factor. Exercise as well was perceivedas a protective factor, however, many refer time limitations.Regarding community aspects, the tools provided within the university were perceived as beneficial; however, they participants suggest that diffusion and promotion of these tools could be improved. Other tools perceived as beneficial were academic counseling and CAPS. Within the family level, structure and communication are factors that can either promote or impair emotional well-being.Family sharing spacesare perceivedas useful tools. Discussion: Interviewed participants mentioned spirituality as a tool that not necessarily is linked to religion. They highlight tools such as mindfulness. Some perceive physical activity as a tool that can interfere with other basic spheres such as sleep or nutrition. It is suggestedthat in the community level, academic and workloads can be reduced to allow better sleep practices.Participants noticed that community tools can be better with improvement in dissemination channels to expand their coverage. CAPS was perceived as a useful tool with a limitation in its coverageand reach. It is suggestedthat family communication can be improved through strategies such as therapy or more sharing spaces. Conclusions: Regardingindividual aspects, perceived crucial capacities wereobtaining good quality sleepand engaging in activities that allow strengthening in spiritual and religious aspects. Regarding communitycapacities, both students and faculty teachers believe that the university provides necessary tools for maintaining emotional well-being. They perceive that these tools lack adequate dissemination. Regardingthe family determinant, the importance of family structure and dynamics wasemphasized ascontributing to personal capacities and as a useful tool for emotional well-being. Familiar conflictcan act as a risk factor.
