Abstract

In Colombia, the political economy of information, communication, and culture (EPICC for itsacronym in Spanish) is a little-known theoretical current within communication studies, due to somesociocultural particularities and the influence of the Frankfurt School and British Cultural Studies.Based on alternative readings of these two schools, culturalist approaches are privileged until today, while the instrumentalist approach to media studies continues to predominate in most academictraining programs. Consequently, EPICC has not been included in training and research programs, noris it part of the theoretical corpus based on which cultural and communicative processes are studied. Therefore, this book was conceived with the purpose of bringing together Colombian and foreignresearchers who have studied and analyzed the distinctive features and communicative realities ofColombia based on EPICC, seeking to stimulate more research on media, communication, and culturefrom the perspective of political economy that will allow broadening our understanding of the structureand functioning of cultural and communication industries in the country.
