Abstract
Objective: Recognize the diagnostic criteria and more frequent treatment of early-onset
periodontitis, aggressive periodontitis, or periodontitis as a manifestation of systemic
disease in children between 3 to 12 years reported in the literature. Methods: A systematic
review of literature that evaluated diagnostic criteria and treatment for children with earlyonset periodontal disease, aggressive periodontitis, or periodontitis as a manifestation of
systemic disease was conducted. All articles were chosen from eight subject-related bibliographic databases available at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Library. Results: 4012
references were found of which 2052 were about diagnostic criteria. 155 were pre-selected
and 25 were included for analysis. Regarding alternative treatments, 1960 were found, 170
pre-selected, and finally 35 included for analysis. None of the articles met the inclusion
criteria proposed for the systematic review, mainly because they did not meet the targeted
age range and the level of evidence required as research reports or case series. Conclusion:
There is no available literature to evaluate the diagnostic criteria and treatment options for
early-onset periodontitis, aggressive periodontitis, or periodontitis as a manifestation of
systemic disease in children between the ages of 3 to 12 years.
