Abstract
Low Back Pain is one of the most frequent causes of work disability. The precise pathophysiologic mechanism that underlies the symptoms can only be precisely determined in approximately 30% of cases. This can be due to limitations in the clinical evaluation and the lack of knowledge of other causes of low back pain different from herniated lumbar disks. The sacroiliac joint is a critical structure for the maintenance of the axial biomechanical stability of the spine. It is a vital transition point between the spine and lower extremities. It is subjected to multiple functional and structural alterations which can ultimately impact its structure and produce low back pain. The following revision seeks to clarify basic clinical concepts related to the sacroiliac joint. A table of diagnostic criteria is proposed for clinical use. Future prospective studies will be needed to evaluate its statistical significance.
