Abstract

The households’ composition of people over 60 years varies according to age, sex and place of residence. Its variation with respect to geographic location makes it evident that it reflects socio-demographic conditions in the past and present of each place. This paper compares the compositions of the households of the elderly in two localities of Bogotá, with characteristics highly differentiated. For this effect, historiographical and interview sources are used that describe in general terms the historical context of the localities, and the 2005 Census to characterize the households’ composition of the elderly. The purpose of the study is to identify the different forms of old age existing in the city, and their relationship with the historical process of settlement. The diversity of aging in Bogotá reveals the need to think of local policies that address aging dynamics, which are both relatively advanced and emerging
