Abstract

This case is about Valor, a Colombian insurance company. Since its foundation more than 40 years ago, Valor has been acknowledged as one of Colombia's best firms to work for due to its family-focused corporate culture. In 2014, Valor was acquired by a multinational reinsurance company and opened new lines of business. This acquisition brought insecurity and instability for employees, and the case analyzes how sustainable human resource management (HRM) practices can help Valor to keep talent within the organization and to achieve its new strategic objectives. The case lays out the story from the point of view of Alexandra, the HRM manager at Valor. After reading the case, students will be able to identify sustainable HRM practices in organizations, identify internal corporate social responsibility practices in an organization, and evaluate the impact of sustainable HRM practices on worker turnover.
