Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical presentation, work-up results, and surgical management of a newborn patient with abdominal mass and sepsis with a rare congenital malformation known as cecoureterocele. Materials and Methods: Review was made of the clinical records, renal scintigraphy, imaging studies and photographic records. An electronic reference list such as Medline was used to search the litetarure. A total 10 articles were found with the MeSH term "ureterocele" associated with "cecoureterocele". The information and cited reference in each article were reviewed and classified according to their topic and methodology. Finally, a working committe select the articles that were included in the discussion. Results: The presence was determined of what was considered a cecoureterocele associated with a single collecting system and ectopic pelvic kidney. The final surgical management was a nephro-ureterectomy with partial ureterocelectomy. Conclusions: Single-system cecoureterocele is a rare and complex malformation of the distal ureter. Early diagnosis and intervention are critical factors, given the probabilty of sepsis and loss of renal function in the newborn. Late complications, such as urinary incontinence, are another factor of poor prognosis in this entity.Σ 2013 Sociedad Colombiana de Urología. Published by Elsevier España, S.L. All rights reserved.
