Abstract
Introduction: Bowen’s disease (BD) is an in situ squamous cell carcinoma of the epidermis. In Colombia, there is limited epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic information available about this condition. This study aims to characterize BD in a university hospital in Bogotá, Colombia. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with secondary data analysis from medical records between 2013 and 2019. Sociodemographic, clinical, histological, and therapeutic data were collected and analyzed, without conducting statistical association tests. Results: A total of 149 BD patient records were analyzed (52% women, 48% men), with a median age of 76 years. The median duration of lesions before consultation was 7 months (IQR: 2-24), and the most common location was the head and face (34%). The most common treatment was conventional surgery (72%), followed by topical 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) (17%) and Mohs micrographic surgery (10%). No recurrences were observed at two years in 64% of patients treated with conventional surgery and 5-FU. No tumor-associated mortality was recorded. Conclusions: This study describes the main characteristics of BD in a university hospital in Bogotá, Colombia, highlighting its higher prevalence in women, frequent localization on the head and face, and the common use of conventional surgery. No recurrences at two years or tumor-related mortality were observed. Further research is needed to better understand BD in Colombia.
