Abstract

Introduction: Within the context of population aging, Colombia has not remained unaffected by this phenomenon. Instead, it has witnessed a sig-nificant demographic shift within a relatively short timeframe, prompting inquiries into the demographic profile of elderly individuals admitted to hos-pital institutions. The aim of this paper is to delineate the characteristics of nonagenarian and centenarian patients admitted to the acute care unit of a tertiary care hospital in Bogotá. Methodology: A cross-sectional observation-al study was conducted, involving the retrospective review of medical records of nonagenarian and centenarian patients admitted to the Geriatrics Unit at San Ignacio University Hospital from June 2019 to December 2021. The study encompassed data from all individuals aged 90 and above, while excluding those with hospitalization durations of 24 hours or less and those with incom-plete data. Results: Among the 724 individuals aged 90 or older identified, 715 were nonagenarians and 9 were centenarians, with women comprising 60.22 % of the total. Regarding baseline conditions, 88.18 % exhibited some degree of dependency in activities of daily living, 41.16 % were deemed frail, and 49.86 % had experienced falls. Additionally, 70.85 % had a prior diagnosis of dementia, and 73.88 % were at nutritional risk or malnourished. In-hospital mortality stood at 15.75 %, with an average length of stay of 5.72 days. Con-clusion: Nonagenarian and centenarian patients admitted to the acute care unit demonstrate a high prevalence of dependency, dementia, and nutrition-al deficiencies, underscoring the importance of specialized, high-quality care in the hospital management of complex elderly individuals.
