Abstract

The following reflection article aims to review the effects that technology and social networks have had on adolescents, who go to their rooms as a safe place and from there to bed as a central place, with some device such as cell phones, tablets and others, which allows them to consume a large amount of content, this mediated by the feeling of being well and not requiring anything else, since their bed and the device feel complete. Hence the term bed-synthesis, which refers to the fact that the bed offers all its sustenance, like photosynthesis in plants. But something that is analyzed in this article is that this behavior gradually leads to three major repercussions in adolescents, which are: Physical inactivity, malnutrition, and social isolation. Although each of them has been studied independently, these three effects cause major changes in mental and physical health, hence the term was changed to bed-symbiosis, and it is due to the close relationship that exists in the adolescent population with their room, and specifically with their bed and some electronic device, which causes them to be there for long periods of time during the day, which can bring major health problems to this population. Reflection: The digital age, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic and other social determinants, has gradually led the adolescent population to restrict themselves much more time in their rooms, and specifically in their beds, with a feeling of well-being and security, but the effects of this behavior lead the population to three direct effects, which are physical inactivity, malnutrition and social isolation, which if prolonged over time can lead to problems of reduction of muscle mass with decreased muscle strength, reduction of cardiac and respiratory function, and can lead to diabetes, hypertension, in addition to behavioral disorders that can become a major public health problem worldwide. Hence, this reflection article seeks to put into discussion the importance of minimizing the use of technology, due to its great repercussions at the health level and more so in the adolescent population.
