Abstract

Introduction: The oral cavity is part of the dermatological examination. Recurrent oral ulcers are frequent conditions with challenging management. Methods: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, MEDLINE and Cochrane using the MESH terms “Oral Ulcer” and “Stomatitis” alone and combined with the MESH term for each pathology using the AND connector. The articles were selected using the author´s criteria. The information was complemented using textbooks. Results: The information retrieved regarding the etiology and classification of this pathology was synthesized and an algorithm for the management of recurrent oral ulcers was proposed. Conclusion: Recurrent oral ulcers require a thorough anamnesis and physical examination that allow their classification, etiologic study and targeted treatment.
