Abstract
This research project proposes an analysis on the phenomenon of the children audience’s participation in the media based on a study about Mi Señal, a multiple platform project developed by the Colombian public television channel Señal Colombia. An analysis of the participation modalities as well as the dynamics of communicative exchanges between the media industry and the audience was made through the identification of the interactivity forms in the selected corpus . A starting hypothesis is set out that the participation offer for children modifies their status as audiences and allows them becoming users in the context of a participatory culture (Jenkins, 2013). However, such participatory dimension is conditioned by some material constraints affecting the equilibrium in the decision-making by the participants (Carpentier, 2002).Based on a pragmatic approach, this research presents a complete characterization of the above mentioned phenomenon. The research perspective allows articulating three questions, each one related to each of the elements forming the media strategy: the communicational purposes in the media industry that define the situation of enunciation targeting the children in the context of a specific participatory offer; the dynamics of communicative exchange developed according to the discursive strategies proposed under the multi-platform project and participatory dimension of Mi Señal; and, finally, the children’s response directly associated with their communicative roles in the context of a social and media-related identity, as defined by the communication contract thus proposed. The results from our research indicate that the participation offer in Mi Señal turns out to be, at the same time, massive and customized, under the pre-established framework for action. The results also account for the prevalence of a participation model operated through the mediation with digital devices. The assorted roles granted to the children account for the complexity of the media strategy that opens spaces, some regulated and some free, depending on the consumption practices by the users. The technical mediation of the digital devices enables to set a co-participation model between the children and their parents amidst a logic of doing branding for Mi Señal.
