Abstract

Objectives: To compare the data for cancer patients care in Colombia during the period 2009- 2013 through the Individual Registration of Health Care Provision (RIPS) with records from the International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC) website: Globocan.

Methods: A search for information of 27 types of cancer in RIPS was performed. From these collected data, age-adjusted incidence rates were estimated following the methodology of direct adjustment. Subsequently, the results were compared with Globocan.

Results: According to RIPS, in the period 2009-2013, 110.879 incident cases of cancer were reported; 68,312 in women and 42,509 in men. For most types of cancer, incidence rates in RIPS registers are lower regarding those records estimated by Globocan. From lowest to highest were: lip and oral cavity cancer (0.15: 1); prostate (0.33: 1); breast (0.74: 1); cervix (0.64: 1); stomach (0.22: 1), colorectal (0.44: 1) and thyroid (0.86: 1).

Conclusion: Differences could be attributed either to an underestimation in the RIPS registers, or to an overestimation in Globocan; or a combination of the two. Given the history and verification mechanisms of records from Pasto, Cali, Manizales and Bucaramanga, Globocan information basis, it is likely that the RIPS incidence data are not sufficiently refined.
