Abstract
Cicero’s influence in the vital and intellectual development of Augustine is indisputable. There are several studies that track the relationship be- tween the two thinkers, in particular, as far as classical rhetoric and the Augustinian reception of Cicero’s categories concerned. However, there is a crucial aspect that has not yet been comprehensively addressed, it is the relationship of the young Augustine with veteran Cicero, that is, the relationship between two composers of philosophical dialogues which, until then, had dealt with rhetoric. The intention here is to trace this rela- tionship from a dialogue which, by its nature, gives us a privileged herme- neutical position: the Contra Academicos.
